Insadong Itinerary: 2-Hour and Half-Day Walking Routes
An Insadong itinerary can fit around two hours for craft shopping, traditional tea and a street walk, or about four hours with a focused museum visit and lunch. Start near Anguk Station, explore the lanes around Insadong-gil, and finish toward Jonggak Station. Choose the longer version for more time inside places, not a longer sightseeing checklist.
These are suggested daytime walking plans. The time budgets include local movement and some flexibility, but not travel from your hotel, long queues or a full craft workshop. They are editorial recommendations, not measured walking times or a preloaded Pglemaps route.
Which Insadong itinerary fits your day?
| Your available time | What to keep | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Around 2 hours | Ssamzi-gil, one tea stop and Insadong-gil | A sit-down lunch, a museum visit and workshops |
| Around 4 hours | The same core, plus selected craft exhibits and lunch | A full museum tour or another major neighborhood |
| Less than 2 hours | Choose shopping or tea as the main event | Trying to complete every stop below |
The useful decision is not how many pins you can collect. It is whether you want time to choose a gift, sit over tea, or understand the craft behind what you see in the shops.
Use this guide to pick your priorities, then start your Seoul plan in Pglemaps with your actual dates and stay area.
The 2-hour route: crafts, tea and a street walk
Anguk Station -> Ssamzi-gil -> Kyungin Museum's traditional tea garden -> Insadong-gil -> Jonggak Station
Allow roughly 35 minutes for Ssamzi-gil, 30 for tea, 25 for street browsing, and 30 for the remaining walking and small delays. If a queue uses that spare time, shorten the browsing or choose another tea stop.
Start with Ssamzi-gil
Ssamzi-gil brings craft shops and small businesses into one cultural shopping complex. Give yourself time to look at a few things properly instead of treating every floor as an item to complete. A workshop is a separate activity: check its duration, price and booking requirements before adding it.
- Search name: Ssamzi-gil / 쌈지길
- Address: 44 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
- Starting station: Anguk, Exit 6
- Find Ssamzi-gil on the map
Visit Seoul lists Ssamzi-gil as opening at 10:30, with holiday closures. Do not build this shopping route around an early-morning arrival; confirm the schedule for your visit date. Individual shops and activities can have their own hours.
Take the side lane for traditional tea
Kyungin Museum of Fine Art has exhibition spaces, a garden and a traditional tea garden, often called Dawon. This is the pause in the route: sit down rather than turning the tea stop into another photo checkpoint.
- Search name: Kyungin Museum of Fine Art / 경인미술관; tea garden / 전통다원
- Address: 11-4 Insadong 10-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
- Find the Kyungin museum site on the map
The museum and tea house are not interchangeable opening-hours listings. Check that the tea house is serving before you commit to a wait, and read the current menu before ordering. The half-hour allowance is for a straightforward tea stop, not tea plus every exhibition.
If tables are unavailable, keep the museum as a location reference and choose an open tea house along your walk. You do not need this one table for the day to work.
Finish along Insadong-gil
Return to Insadong-gil for the street's smaller shops and side lanes, then continue toward Jonggak. Leave the last part flexible: a particular shop might deserve more time than another attraction.
Insadong is the street-and-shopping part of this plan. It is not the same destination as Bukchon or Ikseon-dong. Add those only with extra time, rather than assuming they are included in two hours.
The 4-hour route: add a museum and lunch
Anguk Station -> Seoul Museum of Craft Art -> Ssamzi-gil -> lunch near Insadong 10-gil -> Kyungin traditional tea garden -> Insadong-gil -> Jonggak Station
A morning museum start can give the shops time to open. The four-hour version keeps the same neighborhood focus and adds two things worth sitting or stopping for.
| Part of the visit | Planning allowance | How to keep it comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Selected craft exhibits | 45 minutes | Choose a section, not the entire museum |
| Ssamzi-gil | 35 minutes | Browse without adding a scheduled workshop |
| Lunch | 50 minutes | Change restaurant if the wait takes over |
| Traditional tea | 35 minutes | Keep it as a rest, not another full gallery visit |
| Insadong-gil browsing | 25 minutes | Leave purchases and extra shops optional |
| Remaining movement and flexibility | 50 minutes | Allow for entrances, crossings and short delays |
| Total | 240 minutes | Extend the visit if you prefer slower meals or more exhibits |
Begin at Seoul Museum of Craft Art
The museum gives context to the materials, techniques and objects you will later see while shopping. For this route, choose one area of interest. If the exhibitions become the highlight of your day, let them take longer and shorten the shopping afterward.
- Search name: Seoul Museum of Craft Art / 서울공예박물관
- Address: 4 Yulgok-ro 3-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
- Starting station: Anguk, Exit 1
- Find the craft museum on the map
The museum's visitor information lists daytime opening from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30, and regular closure on Mondays and January 1. Check holiday exceptions and temporary notices. General admission is free, although certain exhibitions can be charged separately. The Children's Museum needs an advance reservation and is not included in this short visit.
On a museum closure day, use the shorter route with a longer lunch or shopping break. Do not assume a seasonal evening-opening notice applies to every museum building.
Make lunch a choice, not a deadline
Gaeseong Mandu Koong is a dumpling restaurant at 11-3 Insadong 10-gil, beside the lane containing Kyungin Museum. It is a lunch candidate, not a guaranteed table or a required stop.
- Search name: Gaeseong Mandu Koong / 개성만두 궁
- Address: 11-3 Insadong 10-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
- Find Koong on the map
Check the current opening hours, break time, payment methods and menu before joining a queue. Public listings differ on some of these details. For a direct check, the listed phone number is +82-2-733-9240. A solo traveler should check the serving size of a hot pot rather than assume it is a single-person meal.
If Koong's wait does not fit, Sadongmyeonok, at 9 Insadong 8-gil, is another dumpling-restaurant candidate in the area. Its Korean name is 사동면옥. Check its current menu and holiday schedule too; a backup is not a promise of immediate seating.
If you choose this alternative, the local order may change: take tea near Kyungin first, then continue toward Insadong 8-gil for food. The museum and main shopping stop do not have to change.
Practical details that change the route
- Starting time: choose a late-morning shopping start, or begin with the craft museum from its listed opening time. Early arrival does not make closed shops available.
- Costs: budget separately for tea, lunch, shopping and any workshop. Museum admission does not make drinks or meals free. Read current menus rather than relying on a single neighborhood price estimate.
- Rain: favor time inside exhibitions or shops, but remember that the walk between them is outdoors. Ssamzi-gil and the museum garden are not an entirely weatherproof route.
- Mobility and luggage: allow extra time for station exits, crossings and building access. Check lift access for the buildings you need; this is not a verified step-free itinerary.
- A fixed appointment afterward: protect the time needed to reach it. Remove optional browsing before cutting the travel buffer.
For current pedestrian directions and the right entrances, use the Naver Map English guide. A straight-line distance on a place card is not a walking route.
Turn the suggested walk into your own Seoul plan
The two versions solve different problems. The shorter walk protects time for your next plan; the half-day version gives you room for craft exhibits and a meal. Your stay location and what comes afterward decide which one makes sense.
Pglemaps is a web-based place to start that planning: select Seoul, your travel dates and your stay or stay area, then choose places for the day. Try Ssamzi-gil and Kyungin Museum as the core; add the craft museum if the longer version fits.
Search using the Korean names above when an English name gives no useful result. Match the address as well as the name: the museum, a shop inside it and a similarly named business are not necessarily the same stop. If a place is missing or walking directions are unavailable, keep its address and verify that part separately in a navigation map. Never treat a straight-line estimate as the time you will spend walking.
You do not need to fill every hour to make the plan worthwhile. Choosing what to leave out is part of building a better day.

Questions before you go
Is two hours enough for Insadong?
It can be enough for one shopping stop, tea and a street walk when queues are short. It is not the same as two hours for a museum, a full meal, shopping and a workshop. Choose the activity you most want before adding the rest.
Should I start at Anguk or Jonggak?
This guide starts at Anguk because the craft museum and northern end of Insadong are convenient starting points. Reverse the street section if you are coming from Jonggak, but check shop opening times and put lunch where it fits. There is no requirement to return to the station where you started.
Can I include Bukchon or Gyeongbokgung?
Yes, with additional time or by replacing part of this plan. They are not included in the two- or four-hour budgets. Read the Bukchon Hanok Village guide for its separate access considerations instead of treating it as an automatic extra stop.
Do these stops include reservations?
No. This is a self-guided itinerary, not a bundled tour or restaurant booking. Check availability directly where needed. Choosing a place for your travel plan does not reserve a table, a workshop or a museum program.
