Things to Do in Itaewon: Food, Art & a Half-Day Route
The most useful things to do in Itaewon for a first visit are browsing Antique Furniture Street, choosing a meal around World Food Street, and, if art interests you, adding Leeum Museum of Art in nearby Hannam-dong. Plan about two hours for the central neighborhood or four hours for a museum-led afternoon.
The key decision is what you want to spend time doing. A leisurely lunch and a few antique shops make a different outing from an exhibition followed by Hannam shopping. You do not need to fit both into a short stop.
Choose your version of Itaewon
| What you want | Where to focus | Suggested time budget |
|---|---|---|
| A meal and a short browse | Itaewon Station, Antique Furniture Street and World Food Street | About 2 hours |
| Art, a cafe and selected shops | Hangangjin Station, Leeum and nearby Hannam-dong | About 4 hours, with an optional meal toward Itaewon |
| A relaxed visit without a museum | Central Itaewon, one shopping stop and a meal | 2-3 hours |
These are editorial planning allowances, including local walking and breaks. They are not measured journey times and exclude travel from your accommodation. A museum queue or a long lunch changes the plan.
Have a museum, restaurant or shop you already want to visit? Start your Seoul route on Pglemaps. Use those places as the starting point, then decide which optional stops deserve the remaining time.
Four things worth choosing between
1. Browse Itaewon Antique Furniture Street
This is the choice for people who enjoy looking closely: cabinets, lamps, tableware and objects with a previous life. You can browse a small section without making furniture shopping the purpose of your trip.
The street is around Bogwang-ro, south of Itaewon Station. Visit Seoul's street listing gives 109-1 Bogwang-ro as a reference address and identifies Exit 4 as the subway approach.
Choose a few open shops rather than trying to inspect every storefront. Individual shops have their own schedules; the name describes an area, not one attraction with a single opening time. Ask before photographing interiors or handling fragile items.
If antiques do not interest you, leave this stop out. A cafe or a longer meal is a useful replacement, not a less complete visit.
2. Make World Food Street your meal stop
Itaewon's international food scene is a reason to visit in its own right. World Food Street is a restaurant area, not one food hall or a market where every vendor serves the same hours. The Korea Tourism Organization's Itaewon guide places global cuisine alongside the district's shopping streets.
Pick a cuisine and check a specific restaurant's menu before arriving. This gives your walk a destination and avoids spending the lunch break comparing every doorway. Confirm opening hours, any afternoon break and last orders with that restaurant.
If you have allergies or dietary requirements, confirm ingredients directly. An international neighborhood does not make every restaurant suitable for every diet. For a quieter visit, choose a meal and daytime browsing rather than assuming Itaewon only makes sense after dark.
3. Give Leeum Museum of Art enough time
Leeum is in Hannam-dong, near Hangangjin Station. It is a substantial museum visit, not a quick photo stop to squeeze between lunch and shopping. Choose the exhibitions you want before choosing the rest of the afternoon.
The museum's official visitor information lists Tuesday-Sunday opening from 10:00 to 18:00, with ticketing ending at 17:30. Monday is the regular closing day, with additional holiday closures. Check the schedule for your date.
The traditional Korean art permanent exhibition is currently listed as free, while special exhibitions can be paid. Do not assume one free gallery makes every exhibition free. Use the official ticket page to check the exhibition and admission option you actually want.
Advance booking is recommended when a particular time matters. On-site tickets are possible, but crowding can mean a wait. The approach from Hangangjin Station includes an uphill section; check access arrangements with the museum if slopes are a concern.
4. Choose a small part of Hannam-dong for shopping and coffee
Hannam-dong is the natural extension for a Leeum afternoon. The area near Hangangjin includes showrooms, shops and cultural spaces, as outlined in Visit Seoul's Hangangjin guide.
Treat it as a neighborhood to select from, not a single pin to tick off. Save one or two shops you genuinely like and one cafe near them. Check their addresses: two places described as being in Hannam-dong do not necessarily sit on the same block.
You can then continue toward Itaewon for a meal, or finish near Hangangjin if the museum and shopping have filled your afternoon. There is no need to add another district just to make the day look busier.
A two-hour Itaewon route: browse, eat, finish nearby
Suggested order: Itaewon Station, Antique Furniture Street, a restaurant around World Food Street, then back toward Itaewon Station.
Choose this version when Itaewon is one part of a larger Seoul day. It keeps the outing around one station and leaves room for a proper meal.
| Part of the visit | Time to set aside |
|---|---|
| Find your way from the station and between stops | 25 minutes |
| Browse a few antique shops | 30 minutes |
| Eat at your selected restaurant | 50 minutes |
| Spare time | 15 minutes |
| Total planning budget | 120 minutes |
This budget assumes a restaurant without a long queue. If you are hungry on arrival, eat first and reverse the browsing order. If lunch takes longer, reduce the shop time instead of rushing the meal.
Do not add Leeum to this two-hour version. Choose the longer plan when the museum matters, or give it a separate visit.
A four-hour route: Leeum, Hannam-dong and an optional Itaewon meal
Suggested order: Hangangjin Station, Leeum Museum of Art, selected Hannam-dong shops, then a meal toward central Itaewon and departure from Itaewon Station.
Put your museum entry time first. A timed visit is a better basis for the afternoon than a cafe queue you cannot predict.
| Part of the visit | Time to set aside |
|---|---|
| Approach, local walking and connections | 45 minutes |
| Selected Leeum galleries | 90 minutes |
| One or two shops and a short cafe break | 45 minutes |
| A meal | 45 minutes |
| Spare time | 15 minutes |
| Total planning budget | 240 minutes |
The 90-minute museum allowance is a starting point, not a claim that it covers every exhibition. If you want a deeper visit, remove the shopping section or keep the meal near the museum. You can also finish around Hangangjin instead of continuing to Itaewon Station.
Keep Antique Furniture Street optional on this version. It belongs to the shorter central-Itaewon outing; adding it after a full museum visit may leave little time to enjoy either.
Make the route work for your actual day
| If your day looks like this | Make this adjustment |
|---|---|
| You are visiting on Monday | Do not build the day around Leeum. Choose food and shops after checking their individual hours. |
| You have a fixed restaurant reservation | Work backward from that time and shorten browsing first. |
| Rain makes the walk unpleasant | Choose one indoor destination and a nearby meal; the streets between stops are not an indoor route. |
| You want to see every museum exhibition | Give Leeum a larger block and remove an optional stop. |
| You arrive late in the afternoon | Check museum ticketing before heading uphill, or choose the central-Itaewon version. |
| You want to continue into the evening | Choose one suitable venue nearby and check your journey home. Do not assume every shop stays open late. |
For a different evening elsewhere in the city, the Seoul at night guide covers separate routes. Those are alternatives for another evening, not extra stops to append to this half-day.
Turn your shortlist into a Pglemaps route
Start with the places you would be disappointed to miss. For one traveler that is Leeum and a particular cafe; for another it is antique shopping and a restaurant. Those choices should lead to different routes.
Pglemaps is a travel-planning website. From the main page, start a Korea route, select Seoul and your dates, and add your accommodation or a suitable area as your base. Then choose to plan by day and search for the places you want to add.
These Korean names can help you identify the right location:
| Place | Korean search name |
|---|---|
| Leeum Museum of Art | 리움미술관 |
| Itaewon Antique Furniture Street | 이태원 앤틱가구거리 |
Check each result's name and address before adding it. A museum's cafe or shop is not the same listing as the museum. For World Food Street, search for your chosen restaurant rather than relying on a result for the whole street. The same applies to individual Hannam-dong shops.
Add your chosen stops to one day and use Build Route to review the suggested plan. Keep your museum or restaurant booking time as a constraint you check yourself. A suggested route does not replace opening-hour checks or guarantee that every appointment fits.
For detailed directions while walking, use a live navigation service; our Naver Map English guide explains that part of the journey. Straight-line distance is not a walking route, and any unavailable journey estimate needs a separate check.
The useful result is a day built around your own priorities: perhaps more art, fewer shops and a longer lunch. These sample routes are starting points, not a preloaded itinerary or a guided tour booking.

Questions about visiting Itaewon
Is Itaewon worth visiting during the day?
Yes, if food, antique browsing, shops or a nearby museum interest you. You do not need to drink or go clubbing to make the visit worthwhile. If your limited Seoul time is mainly for palaces or traditional markets, prioritize those instead of adding Itaewon out of obligation.
How much time do you need in Itaewon?
About two hours can work for a meal and a focused browse. Allow roughly half a day when Leeum and Hannam-dong are part of the plan. Add separate time for travel from and back to your accommodation.
Should you use Itaewon Station or Hangangjin Station?
Both are on Line 6. Use Itaewon Station for the central food-and-antiques outing, or Hangangjin for a museum-first start. You can arrive at one and leave from the other; check the actual connections for your accommodation.
Can you book these routes as a Pglemaps tour?
The routes here are independent sightseeing suggestions, not tours sold by Pglemaps. Museum tickets and restaurant arrangements are separate. If you want a bookable activity on another part of your trip, our Seoul experience comparison helps you choose one without turning this neighborhood visit into a packed activity schedule.
