Things to Do in Seoul in Winter: Indoor Stops & Easy Routes

Things to do in Seoul in winter include a short palace visit, contemporary art at MMCA Seoul, a greenhouse visit at Seoul Botanic Park, and city views from Seoul Sky. The useful trick is to pair one outdoor stop with an indoor visit in the same area. Below are two half-day routes, plus ways to change them when the weather does not cooperate.

A palace courtyard can be the highlight of your morning. It does not have to become three hours of standing outside. Likewise, a warm indoor day does not have to mean travelling across Seoul between unrelated shopping malls.

Choose the experience you most want, then build the rest of the afternoon nearby.

Choose the winter day you actually want

Your priority Start with Make the day easier
Palace architecture and Korean contemporary art Gyeongbokgung + MMCA Seoul Keep the palace visit short and leave time for a hot meal.
A skyline view with more time indoors Seoul Sky + Lotte World Mall Add a short Seokchon Lake walk only when conditions suit.
Greenery without a long outdoor walk Seoul Botanic Park greenhouse Make Magok your main area, not an extra stop after Jamsil.
Spending as little as possible Free galleries and public spaces Use the separate free-activities guide and budget for food and transport.

The first two choices become the four-hour routes below. These are alternatives, not two halves of a compulsory sightseeing marathon.

If keeping admission costs down matters most, our free activities in Seoul guide is a better starting point. This winter guide includes paid attractions because comfort, location and the experience itself matter more here than making every stop free.

Indoor and outdoor activities worth planning around

See Gyeongbokgung without committing to the whole palace

Go for the gates, courtyards and palace buildings. A focused visit can give you that experience without trying to cover every corner of the grounds. Choose a few highlights, keep your coat on, and leave while you still want to enjoy the next stop.

This is mainly an outdoor visit, not a sequence of heated palace rooms. Snow can make the setting striking, but do not choose your travel dates on the assumption that snow will be there.

The official palace timetable lists November through February hours as 09:00-17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Tuesday is the usual closure; public holidays can move the closing day. The standard individual adult ticket is KRW 3,000, with exemptions and special arrangements handled separately.

For this route, allow about 60 minutes inside. That is a suggested short visit, not enough time to see the entire palace. Follow current access signs rather than assuming every gate or building is open.

Give MMCA Seoul a proper place in the day

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul is on Samcheong-ro, near the eastern side of Gyeongbokgung. It is a useful indoor partner for a palace visit, but choose an exhibition that interests you rather than treating the museum as a waiting room.

Allow around 90 minutes for a selected exhibition or two. If you enjoy contemporary art, give it longer and remove a later stop.

MMCA Seoul's visitor information lists regular hours of 10:00-18:00, extended to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Its holiday closures include January 1 and Lunar New Year's Day. Exhibition admission varies; do not assume every exhibition is free or use an old flat-price ticket from another guide.

Choose the Seoul branch, not MMCA Deoksugung or Gwacheon. They are different destinations with different journeys.

Visit the greenhouse at Seoul Botanic Park

Want plants and a change of scenery more than palace history? Make the greenhouse at Seoul Botanic Park your main outing. The indoor collection gives this a different purpose from a winter park walk.

The site is in Magok, in western Seoul. It is an alternative to the central-Seoul and Jamsil routes, not a nearby addition to either. Allow roughly 90-120 minutes for your visit, then choose a meal nearby. Add the outdoor gardens only if you want more time outside.

VISITKOREA's visitor listing gives the greenhouse and themed garden winter hours as 09:30-17:00 from November to February, with last entry at 16:00. Monday is the usual closure and the listed adult admission is KRW 5,000. Check the operator's holiday notices before travelling. An open public park does not mean the greenhouse is open.

Choose Seoul Sky for the view, not just because it is indoors

Seoul Sky is the paid observation attraction in Lotte World Tower in Jamsil. It works well when you want a city view without making an uphill outdoor journey the centre of your day.

Visibility still matters. An indoor observation deck does not remove cloud or haze. Before buying, check the conditions, the official Seoul Sky visitor information, and the terms of the ticket you select. Allow extra time for entry and lift queues. The outdoor Sky Terrace may close in adverse weather; you do not need to use it for this indoor-focused plan.

Do not confuse Seoul Sky with Lotte World Adventure, the aquarium, or the shopping mall. They are separate experiences; walking into the mall does not include an observation-deck ticket.

Make Seokchon Lake a short optional walk

Seokchon Lake adds an outdoor contrast to a Jamsil visit: water, open space and a ground-level view of the tower. You do not need to complete a circuit of both lakes to enjoy it.

For the route below, choose a short section of the east lake near the tower, then return indoors. Treat 20-30 minutes as a planning choice, not a promise that the whole lake circuit fits into that time.

Skip the lakeside section if paths are slippery, access is restricted or the wind makes it unpleasant. The indoor part of the day should still be worth doing on its own.

Half-day route A: palace, art and a warm lunch

Suggested order: Gyeongbokgung Palace → lunch around Samcheong-ro → MMCA Seoul.

Choose this for a first visit when you want both palace architecture and time with Korean contemporary art. An example start is 10:00, finishing around 14:00, provided both attractions are open on your date.

Part of the outing Planning allowance
A focused Gyeongbokgung visit 60 minutes
Lunch near Samcheong-ro 45 minutes
A selected MMCA Seoul exhibition 90 minutes
Local walking, crossings and finding entrances 30 minutes
Extra time for a queue or a slower break 15 minutes
Total 240 minutes

These are editorial time budgets, not measured walking times or guaranteed entry slots. Add the journey from and back to your accommodation separately.

Start at the palace because it has the earlier winter closing time. Afterward, follow the open exit and street route toward Samcheong-ro. Do not assume a line drawn across the palace grounds represents a usable exit.

Pick the lunch venue before leaving the palace. A hot soup or noodle meal can be a useful pause; check ingredients, dietary suitability, prices and opening hours at the restaurant you choose. A restaurant is not included in either attraction ticket.

After lunch, spend the main indoor part of the outing at MMCA Seoul. Finishing there also leaves room to stay longer if an exhibition catches your attention.

What to change on a difficult day

If Gyeongbokgung is closed, make MMCA and lunch the plan; do not call the result the same four-hour palace route. If conditions make the outdoor visit uncomfortable, shorten it or leave it out. If the museum is closed or its exhibitions do not appeal, choose another day's route rather than relying on it as a guaranteed warm refuge.

This is not the day to add a full Bukchon walk, Insadong shopping, Namsan and Hongdae afterward. A shorter list gives you room to enjoy the places you chose.

Half-day route B: Jamsil views with an indoor fallback

Suggested order: Seoul Sky → Lotte World Mall lunch or cafe → a short Seokchon Lake east-side walk.

Choose this when you want a skyline experience and an easy way to stay indoors between activities. Start late morning or early afternoon, subject to the observation deck's operating hours and your ticket conditions.

Part of the outing Planning allowance
Seoul Sky visit, excluding entry queues 75 minutes
Entry, security and lift-queue allowance 45 minutes
Meal or cafe in Lotte World Mall 60 minutes
Short lakeside walk 25 minutes
Connections, entrances and extra time 35 minutes
Total 240 minutes

This is another editorial four-hour budget, excluding accommodation travel. Busy periods may require more queue time. The mall is large: allow for moving between floors and finding the correct entrance, not only the distance between map pins. Its official floor guide shows the dining floors; check your chosen restaurant's own service hours separately.

The lake is the optional part. If it is too cold, replace the walk with more time at your meal or selected shops. If visibility is poor and the view is your main reason for going, reconsider the observation-deck purchase rather than buying it just to complete a checklist.

A Jamsil meal-and-shopping visit without the tower is a different, cheaper plan, but not the same experience. Do not automatically replace the tower with another paid attraction unless you actually want that activity.

Want sunset instead?

Move your meal earlier and plan the tower visit around sunset for your actual date. This may require a different ticket time and more queue allowance. A fixed 17:00 arrival does not guarantee a sunset view, immediate entry or clear conditions.

Keep the lake walk in daylight, or leave it out. Our Seoul at night guide covers separate evening ideas; you do not need to fit them all after this outing.

Adjust the plan before the cold makes the decision for you

Situation Useful change
Strong wind, icy paths or a weather warning Remove the outdoor segment and follow local access guidance.
Cloud or haze hides the skyline Reconsider paying for a view; choose an indoor activity you value on its own.
You arrive after lunch Check admission deadlines first and choose one main attraction.
A warm break takes longer than expected Keep the break and remove the optional walk.
You want a winter festival or skating rink Check this season's official dates, hours and ticket rules before adding it.

Wear layers that are comfortable both outside and indoors, and choose shoes suitable for the day's conditions. Keep gloves accessible instead of buried at the bottom of your bag. You will still walk between stations, entrances and buildings on an indoor-focused day.

Seasonal lights and skating can be enjoyable additions, but an old event page is not proof that something is operating during your trip. These routes do not depend on a festival, snowfall or an outdoor rink being available.

Make your own winter route on Pglemaps

The useful question is not "How many places can I save?" It is "Which outdoor stop do I care about, and what will I enjoy nearby afterward?"

Pglemaps is a website for turning the places you want to visit into a Korea travel route. Start from the main page, choose Seoul and your travel dates, then set your accommodation or a suitable starting area. Add your chosen places to the same day and use Build Route to review the suggested route.

Start with one of these small sets:

  • Palace and art: Gyeongbokgung, your selected lunch venue and MMCA Seoul.
  • Jamsil: Seoul Sky, your selected venue in Lotte World Mall and a suitable Seokchon Lake entrance.
  • Magok alternative: Seoul Botanic Park and a nearby meal, leaving room to extend the greenhouse visit.

Check the place name and address, especially for museums with several branches or attractions inside a large complex. A general mall or lake pin is not a restaurant table or a specific entrance.

Build the day around your own starting point, not someone else's hotel. Then check current opening hours and ticket conditions separately. Use live navigation for the actual journey; our Naver Map English guide can help with that.

The routes in this article are suggestions to adapt, not preloaded itineraries. Even after generating a route, check venue opening hours and any restrictions affecting outdoor paths for your date.

Questions about winter sightseeing in Seoul

Is winter a good time for a first Seoul trip?

It can be, if palace visits, museums, food and indoor city views interest you. If your ideal trip depends on long park walks or spending most of the day outdoors, think carefully about that trade-off. Plan around the experiences you want, not a promise of snowy scenery.

Can I use these routes in December, January and February?

Use them as planning templates, then check your date. Palace winter hours, museum holiday closures and observation-deck arrangements are different things. A December festival also does not automatically continue into January or February.

Do I need to buy every ticket in advance?

No single rule covers all these places. Check the specific exhibition or attraction before choosing a date or ticket. For a view-dependent visit, pay attention to the ticket's change and cancellation conditions as well as the forecast. Pglemaps route planning is separate from admission-ticket availability.

Can I combine central Seoul, Jamsil and the botanical garden in one day?

You could spend a large part of the day travelling between them, but that is not the winter plan recommended here. Choose one cluster for a half day and give the other places a different day. A day with one memorable visit, a good meal and an optional walk can be enough.
