통영, 케이블카만 타고 가면 절반만 본 거예요
"통영 - 출처 pexels"

Most first-timers in Tongyeong do the same exact route.

Cable car up Mireuksan, walk through Dongpirang mural village, eat one chungmu gimbap meal, and leave thinking, "Tongyeong? Once is enough."

But people who actually know Tongyeong do it differently.
I made the cable-car-only mistake on my first visit too. A friend later told me, "You saw maybe 10% of Tongyeong."
Then I went back with him, and that's when I actually fell in love with the city.

Tongyeong has a charm you absolutely can't feel from a cable car cabin.
Sunset at Gangguan harbor with a plate of sashimi and a glass of soju.
Watching the sunrise from Dongpo Lookout at 5am.
Taking a ferry to Yokjido for a bowl of sweet potato porridge.
That's the real Tongyeong.

So in this guide, I'm covering how to actually enjoy Tongyeong beyond the cable car, locals' favorite hidden spots, real food beyond honey bread, and a recommended 2-day itinerary.
The cable car is fine for a one-time ride, but the real magic of Tongyeong is everywhere else.

🚠 Why the Cable Car Alone Isn't Enough

The Mireuksan Cable Car is a great attraction. The view of the Hallyeo Maritime is spectacular.
But thinking that's all Tongyeong has? You're missing the city.

Cable-Car-Only Trip Real Tongyeong Trip
30 min at Mireuksan summit 1 hour of Gangguan sunset
Dongpirang mural photos Sunrise at Dongpo Lookout
One chungmu gimbap Oysters + sea pineapple + sashimi + dachi
One bag of honey bread Bbettegi porridge + Tongyeong anchovy noodles
Gone in 4 hours Even 2 days feels short

💡 Limitations of the Cable Car

  • Fast to the summit, but you also come right back down
  • You miss everything Tongyeong has beyond the Mireuksan view
  • 1-2 hour wait in peak season
  • ₩17,000 (about $13 USD) round trip for adults

💡 What Tongyeong Actually Is

Tongyeong is Korea's "Admiral Yi Sun-shin city," the city beloved by poet Baek Seok, and the pinnacle of southern coast cuisine.
- The Hallyeo Maritime National Park, made of 364 islands
- The historic site of the Battle of Hansan (Imjin War)
- Korea's first underwater tunnel
- Home of premium oysters, anchovies, and seafood

Reducing all this to a single cable car ride is a real loss.

I made that mistake my first time. When a friend asked, "How was Tongyeong?" I said, "Yeah, it was fine. Once is enough." He gave me a look and said, "You really don't know Tongyeong, do you?"
Then we went together, and I finally met the real city.

What to do after the cable car and Dongpirang.

🥇 Gangguan Harbor + Turtle Ships

The harbor right in the middle of downtown Tongyeong.
- 4 full-scale replica turtle ships docked (₩1,000 admission)
- Sunset views are stunning
- Sashimi + dachi + oysters all happen here
- Beautiful at night too

Arriving around 6pm to catch the sunset, see the turtle ships, and grab some sashimi: that's the Tongyeong template.

🥈 Tongyeong Underwater Tunnel

Korea's first underwater tunnel (opened 1932)
- 461m long, 13.5m deep
- Walk underneath the sea
- Free admission
- Connects Mireukdo to downtown Tongyeong

Great for atmospheric photos, and historically significant (built during the Japanese occupation).

🥉 Seopirang (99 Stairs)

Dongpirang's quieter sister neighborhood.
- Climb the 99 stairs for sweeping views of Tongyeong and the sea
- Best paired with Dongpirang
- Near the historic home of novelist Park Kyung-ni

🌅 Nammangsan Sculpture Park

The closest park to downtown, flat and accessible, great for families.
- Outdoor sculpture works
- Well-maintained walking paths
- Where locals come for daily walks

🚢 Yi Sun-shin Park

A coastal park overlooking the site of the Hansan Battle.
- Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin
- Open lawn
- Views of Hansan Island and Gyeonnaeryang Strait
- Refreshing on windy days

🎨 Dipirang (Digital Pirang)

Dongpirang at night.
- Digital murals made of light projections
- Hours: 7pm-10pm
- Admission ₩15,000 (about $11 USD)
- Great for families and couples

I didn't know about Dipirang at first, and when I went, I was honestly stunned. I'd never realized Tongyeong could be this beautiful at night.

🍽️ Tongyeong's Real Food Scene (Beyond Honey Bread)

Tongyeong's food scene is so much more than just honey bread. Here's the real lineup.

🐟 Tongyeong's TOP 7 Must-Eat Dishes

Food Why Try It Recommended Spots
Chungmu Gimbap Tongyeong's signature Ddoongbo Halmae Gimbap, Dongjin Gimbap
Dachi (drinking spread) Tongyeong-style banquet Lots around Gangguan
Oyster dishes Tongyeong oysters are different November-March season
Sea pineapple bibimbap Spring specialty Various spots in Tongyeong
Bbettegi porridge Dried sweet potato porridge Tongyeong Bbettegi Juk (Cultural Plaza)
Sirak gukbap Dried radish leaf soup Dawn market sirak gukbap
Honey bread (kkulppang) Famous dessert Omisa Kkulppang (the original)

🍣 Dachi Is the Real Pinnacle of Tongyeong Dining

A unique Tongyeong-style drinking restaurant that you won't find in Seoul.
- Order one main, and 7-10 side dishes come automatically
- Sashimi, oysters, sea pineapple, seafood salads, pancakes, soups
- ₩30,000-50,000 per person (about $22-37 USD)
- Plenty around Gangguan

The first time I went to a dachi place, my reaction was: "All this for that price?"
Once you experience Tongyeong dachi, regular drinking spots in Seoul start to feel boring.

🥬 Sirak Gukbap: The Pinnacle of Early-Morning Dining

The Tongyeong dawn market is lined with sirak gukbap restaurants.
- Dried radish leaves + soybean paste + seafood broth
- About ₩7,000-8,000 a bowl
- Open from 5am
- The breakfast of Tongyeong fishermen

Wake up at 5am, eat a bowl of sirak gukbap, and you'll feel the soul of Tongyeong.

🍯 The Real Honey Bread Spot

I thought honey bread was the same everywhere. It's not.
- Omisa Kkulppang (Hangnam-dong original branch): The original, since the 1960s
- They make only 100 per day, often sold out by afternoon
- Other honey bread shops are everywhere, but try Omisa at least once

I waited 30 minutes in line at the original Omisa, and it was genuinely different.
The red bean paste is alive. The sweetness is restrained.

🏝️ The Real Treasure: Island Trips

Tongyeong's true magic is actually its islands. Of the 364, these are the must-visits.

🥇 Yokjido

The most popular island from Tongyeong.
- About 1-hour ferry from Tongyeong (5-7 sailings daily)
- Marine cable car + observation deck
- Cycle or drive the island loop
- Great for an overnight trip

🥈 Bijindo

Literally means "Silk-like Pearl Island."
- About 40 minutes by ferry
- Two islands connected by a sand bar (stunning)
- Beach + hiking
- Doable as a day trip

🥉 Somaemuldeungdo

Small but spectacular.
- About 1 hour 20 minutes by ferry
- The lighthouse island and sand path are iconic
- Photo-perfect
- Day trip recommended

🏝️ Hansando

The historic site of Admiral Yi's Battle of Hansan.
- About 25 minutes by ferry (the closest)
- Jeseungdang (replicated headquarters of Admiral Yi)
- History + nature
- Great for older travelers or history buffs

🌊 Yeonhwado

Famous for dramatic rock cliffs.
- About 1-hour ferry
- Yeonhwado Suspension Bridge, Dragon Head Cliffs
- Great trekking
- Photo spot

💡 Island Trip Tips

  • Check ferry schedules in advance (weather can cancel)
  • Book by the night before
  • Bring motion sickness meds
  • Sunscreen and water essential
  • Departures from Tongyeong Ferry Terminal

I did an overnight on Yokjido, and it's the #1 place I want to go back to after Tongyeong.

☕ Tongyeong Cafes and Rest Spots

Tongyeong's cafe scene is well-developed. Coffee with sea views, everywhere.

🌊 Ocean View Cafes

1️⃣ Downtown - Around Gangguan
- Cafes right next to Gangguan harbor
- Sip coffee while watching turtle ships
- Heart of downtown vibe

2️⃣ Mireukdo - Near the Cable Car
- Many cafes with Hallyeo Maritime views
- Coffee with Mireuksan in view
- Sunset spot

3️⃣ Dongpirang Cafes

- Tongyeong city + sea in one view
- Small but atmospheric

🍰 Tongyeong Dessert Cafes

  • Tongyeong honey bread cafes (modern twists)
  • Hansando mochi (traditional dessert)
  • Bingsu with sea views

💡 Cafe Strategy

Tongyeong's downtown is compact, so you can walk between cafes.
Add 1-2 cafe stops along your Gangguan → Dongpirang → Seopirang route, and you're golden.

⚓ One Last Word Before You Go

Tongyeong is a city you can never know from a cable car.

  • Spots → Cable car + Dongpirang are just the start, add Gangguan, the Underwater Tunnel, and Seopirang
  • Food → Beyond chungmu gimbap and honey bread, try dachi, sirak gukbap, and oyster dishes
  • Islands → Yokjido, Bijindo, and Somaemuldeungdo are the real jewels
  • Time → Meet Tongyeong at dawn, sunset, and night

I also went once and thought, "Cable car was nice, done."
The second visit was when I met the real Tongyeong, and I've been back three more times.
Tongyeong doesn't reveal itself all at once. It's a city that gets better the slower and deeper you go.

Next time you're in Tongyeong, after the cable car routine, put your phone down for a moment and sit at Gangguan harbor.
The sound of boats coming in, seagulls overhead, the sunset light.
That's where the real Tongyeong begins.
