El Nido Off-Season: Everyone avoids it, but it's actually a fantastic time to visit
"El Nido - Source pexels"

If you search for El Nido trips, everyone says, "Avoid the off-season."
They claim it rains a lot during the rainy season from June to October, and you can't do island hopping tours.
But I went to El Nido in late August, and it's in my top 5 trips of all time.

A friend who went during peak season said they waited 1 hour and 30 minutes just to enter Big Lagoon.
I went during the off-season, and my group was the only one in Big Lagoon for 30 minutes.
No one got in the way of taking photos, and there was only silence while kayaking.
At that moment, the phrase "paradise on Earth" truly came to mind.

It's not that off-season El Nido is better than peak season in every
way. There are definitely trade-offs: rainy season weather, some tour restrictions, etc. However, if
you know what to expect, the off-season can be much more appealing.

So, in this article, I've honestly summarized the true charm of El Nido's off-season, what the rainy season weather is actually like, price differences by season, and off-season travel
tips.It might differ from popular information, but it's based on my direct experience.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ El Nido Off-Season: When Does It Start and End?

The Philippine seasons are divided into two periods based on rainfall.

Category Period Characteristics Number of Travelers
Dry Season (Peak Season) November~May Clear, hot, calm seas Very high
Wet Season (Off-Season) June~October Showers, humid Low
Super Peak Season December~February Korean winter + Christmas/Lunar New Year Overwhelmingly high
Low Off-Season September~October Rainy season but less rain Lowest

๐Ÿ’ก More Details by Season

June - Start of rainy season. Increased frequency of rain
July~August - Full rainy season. Highest rainfall (over 300mm per month)
September - End of rainy season, possibility of typhoons
October - End of rainy season, gradually improving
November~Early December - Golden period. Almost no rain, off-season prices still available

๐Ÿ’ก Recommended Off-Season Period

The absolute best times are early to mid-June or late October to early.
November.- June: Early rainy season, still low frequency of
rain- Late October~Early November: End of rainy season, almost dry season level

These periods are a golden window where prices are off-season, and the weather is close to dry season conditions.

I went in late August, and it was also really good. Luckily, it barely rained on 3 out of 5 days of my trip, and on rainy days, it was just a 1-2 hour shower before clearing up.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Off-Season Rainy Weather: What's It Really Like?

Hearing the word "rainy season" and thinking of Korea's monsoon season is a big misunderstanding.

โ˜€๏ธ The Reality of Rainy Season Weather

  • Not all-day rain - usually 1-3 hour showers
  • Clears up quickly after showers - sun comes out again
  • Sun is strong - really hot when it's not raining
  • High humidity - a bit sticky
Month Average Temperature Rainfall Rainy Days
June 27~32ยฐC 184mm 12 days
July 26~31ยฐC 303mm 16 days
August 26~31ยฐC 337mm 17 days
September 26~31ยฐC 290mm 16 days
October 26~32ยฐC 270mm 15 days

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Key Differences from Korea's Monsoon Season

Item Korea's Monsoon Season Philippines' Rainy Season
Rain Duration Cloudy + rain all day 1~3 hour showers
Sky Consistently dark Clears up after rain
Activity Possible Limited Plenty possible
Humidity Very high High but tolerable

โš ๏ธ Typhoon Probability

  • Typhoons are possible from July to October
  • El Nido is in northern Palawan, so it's less directly affected
  • Still, checking the weather before departure is essential

When I went in late August, it rained on 2 out of 5 days of my trip.
Even then, it was short, about 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon.
The rest of the time was clear, and all island hopping tours proceeded normally.

โœจ 7 Reasons Why the Off-Season is Great

These are the true charms I felt from my direct experience.

๐Ÿฅ‡ 1. Fewer People (Seriously)

The experience of being the only group in Big Lagoon for 30 minutes was truly
shocking.During peak season, there are reportedly hundreds of people at one lagoon. In
the off-season, you have plenty of time to take amazing photos.

๐Ÿฅˆ 2. Island Hopping Tours are Relaxed

In the off-season, many boats carry only about 4-6 people.
During peak season, one boat can carry 20 or more.
It's comfortable on the boat, and it feels like one guide is looking after just us.

๐Ÿฅ‰ 3. Prices are Really Cheap

Accommodation prices are 30-50% of peak season levels.
A 5-star resort that costs 600,000 KRW in peak season might be 200,000-300,000 KRW in off-season.
Airfare is discounted at a similar rate.

๐ŸŒฟ 4. Nature in its Pristine State

Plants are greener during the rainy season. The cliffs around the lagoons feel truly alive.
Waterfalls are also more abundant, making them look more magnificent.

๐ŸŽ 5. Locals are Friendlier

Perhaps because there are fewer tourists, the staff and guides are much friendlier.
It's like they're not exhausted from dealing with crowds.

๐ŸŒ… 6. Sunsets are More Spectacular

During the rainy season, clouds come in various shapes, making sunset views more dramatic.
"Pink skies" appear frequently.

๐Ÿข 7. Better Time to See Marine Life

Warmer water temperatures lead to increased sightings of turtles and tropical fish.
More abundant marine life can be observed while snorkeling.

๐Ÿ’ฐ How Much Do Accommodation and Airfare Prices Differ?

The price difference is truly key. Off-season El Nido is truly the ultimate in value for money.

๐Ÿจ Accommodation Price Comparison

Accommodation Class Peak Season (1 night) Off-Season (1 night) Discount Rate
Guesthouse 30,000~50,000 KRW 15,000~25,000 KRW Approx. 50%
3-star Hotel 70,000~100,000 KRW 35,000~55,000 KRW Approx. 50%
4-star Resort 150,000~250,000 KRW 70,000~120,000 KRW Approx. 50%
5-star Resort 500,000~800,000 KRW 200,000~400,000 KRW Approx. 50%

Especially for 5-star resorts (El Nido Resorts series), the off-season discounts are huge.
Places like Miniloc Island Resort and Lagen Island Resort can be visited at truly reasonable prices during the off-season.

โœˆ๏ธ Airfare Price Comparison

Route Peak Season Round Trip Off-Season Round Trip Discount Rate
Incheon โ†’ Manila 600,000~900,000 KRW 300,000~500,000 KRW Approx. 40%

๐Ÿš— Other Costs

Item Price Notes
Island Hopping Tour A 1,400~1,700 PHP (approx. 33,000 KRW) Same for off-season/peak season
Island Hopping Tour C 1,500~1,800 PHP (approx. 36,000 KRW)
Environmental Fee 200 PHP (one-time) Valid for 10 days
Puerto โ†’ El Nido Van 700~900 PHP (approx. 18,000 KRW) 5~6 hours
Airport Taxi 500~700 PHP

๐Ÿ’ก Off-Season Total Cost Example (4 nights, 5 days)

  • Airfare: Approx. 350,000 KRW
  • 4-star hotel 4 nights: Approx. 320,000 KRW
  • Island hopping tour 2 times: Approx. 70,000 KRW
  • Food/Transportation: Approx. 150,000 KRW
  • Total approx. 890,000 KRW (per person)

The same itinerary in peak season would be approx. 1,600,000~1,800,000 KRW.
That's almost a 1,000,000 KRW difference.

โ›ต Island Hopping Tours Available in the Off-Season

Most island hopping tours proceed normally even in the off-season.

โœ… Tours Available in the Off-Season

Island Hopping Tour A (Most Popular)
- Big Lagoon, Shimizu Island, Secret Lagoon, 7 Commandos Beach
- 90% normal operation even in off-season

Island Hopping Tour B
- Snake Island, Cudugnon Cave, Cathedral Cave, Entalula Beach
- Normal operation even in off-season

Island Hopping Tour C
- Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Talisay Beach, Secret Beach
- Normal operation even in off-season

Island Hopping Tour D
- Cadlao Lagoon, Paradise Beach, Natnat Beach, Bucal Beach, Small Lagoon
- Normal operation even in off-season

โš ๏ธ Off-Season Tour Precautions

  • On days with rough waves, some courses may be excluded (e.g., Small Lagoon)
  • Operations suspended during typhoon warnings (safety first)
  • Depart early in the morning (to avoid afternoon showers)
  • Check weather before departure is essential

๐Ÿ’ก Best Off-Season Tour Courses

Recommended combinations:
- Day 1: Tour A (Big Lagoon is a must-go)
- Day 2: Tour C (Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach)
- Day 3: Tour B or D (choice)

I went in the order of A โ†’ C โ†’ D, and since it was off-season, there were only 4 people on the boat.
The guide took care of us almost like a 1:1 guide, which was a truly luxurious experience.

โš ๏ธ Things You Can't Do in the Off-Season

Honestly, there are some things you can't do in the off-season.

โŒ 1. Part of Bacuit Bay Caves

Cannot enter if waves are rough. Often restricted in the off-season.

โŒ 2. Some Outer Islands

In the off-season, the sea can be rough, so some courses going to distant islands may be canceled.

โŒ 3. Perfect Selfie Life Shots

Sometimes on cloudy days, the sea color is a bit less vibrant.
However, the advantage is that there are no people, so you can take photos freely.

โŒ 4. Some Skydiving/Paragliding

Not in El Nido itself, but some nearby activities may be restricted.

โŒ 5. Beach Photos Full of Sunlight

If you want photos with bright sunshine all day, the off-season cannot guarantee it.

๐Ÿ’ก Still Enough Reasons

While there are these downsides:
- All main island hopping tours are possible
- Fewer people means everything is relaxed
- Prices are much more reasonable

I believe the advantages overwhelmingly outweigh the disadvantages.

๐Ÿ“… Recommended El Nido Off-Season Itinerary

About 4 nights and 5 days is most suitable for off-season El Nido.

Day 1. Arrive in Manila + Travel to Puerto Princesa

  • Incheon โ†’ Manila (morning departure recommended)
  • Manila โ†’ Puerto Princesa (domestic flight, 1 hour)
  • Overnight in Puerto Princesa or travel directly to El Nido (5-hour van ride)

Day 2. Arrive in El Nido + Relax

  • Afternoon arrival (if using a van)
  • Check into hotel, then beach stroll
  • Dinner on Corong Corong street (local restaurant)

Day 3. Island Hopping Tour A

  • Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island, Seven Commandos Beach
  • Depart 9 AM, return 5 PM
  • Dinner at a beach cafe

Day 4. Island Hopping Tour C

  • Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Secret Beach
  • The tour with the most amazing photo opportunities
  • Go to the beach for sunset

Day 5. Free Time + Departure

  • Morning free time (massage, beach cafe)
  • Afternoon travel to Puerto Princesa

๐Ÿ’ก If you want a more relaxed trip

5 nights and 6 days is good:
- Day 3: Tour A
- Day 4: Rest + Beach
- Day 5: Tour C
- Day 6: Tour B or D

Island hopping tours are full-day activities, so going every other day is good for recovering energy.

๐Ÿ’ก Most Recommended Item

Waterproof phone case - essential for taking amazing photos during island hopping tours.
Recommend a case that's safe even if dropped in the sea. Available at Daiso/online for 5,000~15,000 KRW.

I didn't bring one initially, and it rained in Big Lagoon, so I couldn't take
half my photos.My #1 regret.

โš ๏ธ Precautions for Off-Season Travel

โš ๏ธ 1. Allow Flexibility in Your Itinerary

Typhoons/bad weather can change plans. It's safer to have
about one spare day for island hopping tours.

โš ๏ธ 2. Travel Insurance is Essential

Flight delays/cancellations are more likely in the rainy season. It's
important to have insurance for flexibility.

โš ๏ธ 3. Exchange Pesos in Advance

ATMs in El Nido are limited and often malfunction.Recommend
exchanging currency in Manila or Puerto Princesa.

โš ๏ธ 4. Prepare for Internet/Communication

El Nido Wi-Fi is slow.
Recommend a local SIM (Globe, Smart) or roaming.

โš ๏ธ 5. Book Island Hopping Tours in Advance

Even in the off-season, popular tours can sell out.
Recommend booking 1-2 days in advance.

โš ๏ธ 6. El Nido Airport vs. Puerto Princesa Airport

  • El Nido Airport (ENI): Direct flights, expensive but fast
  • Puerto Princesa Airport (PPS): Connecting flights, cheaper but 5-6 hours travel
  • PPS is more cost-effective for the off-season

๐Ÿ“š More Detailed Official Information

Official information regarding El Nido travel can be found below.

Especially during the rainy season, typhoon information is important, so I recommend checking the safety information on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Overseas Travel Safety website again before departure.

๐ŸŒฟ If You've Made Up Your Mind

El Nido in the off-season, if you're well-informed, it's the trip of a lifetime.

  • Timing โ†’ Early to mid-June or late October to early November is the golden period
  • Price โ†’ Almost half compared to peak season
  • Experience โ†’ Fewer people, tranquil, true paradise on Earth
  • Essentials โ†’ Waterproof case, raincoat, aqua shoes are a must

I also worried at first, "Should I go during the off-season?"
But after going, I was so satisfied that I boasted about it to my friends.
The time everyone else avoids is precisely when you can experience the real El Nido.

Consider El Nido in the off-season for your next vacation.
Where the tourists have left, true nature and tranquility await.
