Sokcho to Seoraksan National Park: Bus, Taxi & Your Return Trip

To get from Sokcho to Seoraksan National Park, take a park-bound bus 7 or 7-1 from a stop served by that route, or take a taxi to Seoraksan Sogongwon. From the Intercity Bus Terminal stop, use 7-1. From the Express Bus Terminal stop, either route serves the park.

The useful question is not just how to get there. It is how much park time you can enjoy before you need to be back in Sokcho.

First, choose the right Seoraksan entrance

Use this destination when checking your journey:

Seoraksan Sogongwon: 설악산소공원

This is the Outer Seorak visitor entrance reached from Sokcho. A broad search for "Seoraksan National Park" can point to a different part of the park. This guide does not cover journeys to Osaek or Baekdamsa.

Save your actual starting point too: your hotel, the Express Bus Terminal, or the Intercity Bus Terminal. The two terminals are different places.

Bus or taxi: which fits your day?

The Sokcho bus fare page lists T-Money among the accepted transport cards. This does not mean an ordinary foreign credit or debit card can be tapped as a transit card.

Neither option includes the cable car. Do not choose a taxi solely because an old blog gives a fixed fare or journey time.

Where to catch the bus in Sokcho

From Sokcho Express Bus Terminal

Look for the park-bound stop named 고속버스터미널. Both 7 and 7-1 serve this stop on the way to 설악산소공원.

Check the direction as well as the route number. Standing near the right terminal is not enough if you are on the wrong side of the road.

From Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal

Use bus 7-1 from the park-bound stop named 시외버스터미널. In the official stop lists, route 7 does not list this same outbound stop; it serves 수복탑 instead.

Check the official 7-1 route for your boarding point. Do not assume a guide saying "take 7 or 7-1 near the terminal" means both leave from the same stop.

From your hotel

Start a directions search from the hotel itself to 설악산소공원. A nearby stop may save you a trip to a terminal. Compare the walk, wait and direction before deciding.

Check the return stop before entering the park

The return trip is not necessarily the outbound trip in reverse.

Both routes list 고속버스터미널 on their return into Sokcho. However, the 7-1 return list passes 수복탑 and then 한국전력; it does not repeat the outbound 시외버스터미널 stop.

If you have an onward departure from the Intercity Bus Terminal, check the correct return alighting stop and the walk to the terminal before setting off. Keep the terminal name from your ticket, not just a map pin called "Sokcho Bus Terminal."

Timetable times also need context. A departure from the route's starting point is not the time the bus reaches your boarding stop. Check the day, direction and starting point; do not build a tight connection around a copied "last bus" time.

Choose your park visit before adding more stops

The Seoraksan Cable Car operator sells tickets on site for the same day, not through advance reservations. The listed adult return fare is KRW 16,000. Wind and weather can interrupt operation, so the cable car should not be the fixed anchor for a timed connection.

Trail access is a separate decision. The Korea National Park Service sets entry limits by route and access point and publishes current restrictions. A bus still running does not mean every trail is open or that there is enough daylight for your walk.

Work backward from your departure: a planning example

Suppose you have booked an onward bus from Sokcho at 18:00. Instead of fitting in one more park stop, first work out when you need to reach the park bus stop.

The numbers below are illustrative planning allowances, not an official timetable or verified journey duration.

There is no claim that a bus leaves the park at 15:45. Replace the travel and waiting allowances with the day's service information and your own starting point. Add more margin when traffic, queues or weather warrant it.

Your walk back to the park bus stop comes before 15:45 in this example. That is the detail that should decide when you turn around, not how many attractions remain on a wish list.

Give your Sokcho day a place in the bigger trip

Start with three anchors: where you stay, Seoraksan Sogongwon, and the terminal or accommodation you must return to. A market visit or beach stop can stay optional until those three work together.

How long does the journey from Sokcho to Seoraksan take?

There is no useful single door-to-door time for every hotel and terminal. Check an estimate from your exact starting point, then include the walk to the stop, waiting and traffic. For the return, calculate all the way to your next departure point, not just back to central Sokcho.

What should I do with a suitcase?

Ask your accommodation about luggage storage before planning a park visit between checkout and your next bus. Do not assume storage is available or included. Removing a separate luggage-collection trip from a tight afternoon is worth considering when you choose where to stay.
