Things to Do in Gangneung, South Korea: Beaches, Coffee & Routes
For a first visit, choose a beach, a food stop and one different experience. Things to do in Gangneung, South Korea, include coffee beside Anmok Beach, browsing Jungang Market, walking by Gyeongpo Lake and visiting Ojukheon. Pick the places that matter to you, then group them by area instead of trying to see the whole coastline in one day.
Our simplest starting plan is Anmok Beach and Coffee Street, followed by Jungang Market and the nearby part of Wolhwa Street. History lovers can build their day around Ojukheon instead. A lake-and-tofu day works better around Gyeongpo and Chodang.

Choose the Gangneung you want to see
The beach, the coffee and the tofu lunch can all sound essential. They do not all need to be separate journeys. Start with the kind of day you would enjoy, then add one nearby contrast.
The time allowances below are our suggested time at each stop, not official visiting durations. They exclude travel and queues. Do not add every row together as a one-day itinerary.
| Place or area | Choose it for | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|
| Anmok Beach and Coffee Street | A sea walk and an ocean-view coffee break in one area | 90-120 minutes |
| Gangmun Beach | A beach stop to pair with the Chodang area | 45-60 minutes |
| Gyeongpo Lake | A lakeside walk rather than another cafe | 60-90 minutes for a selected section |
| Chodang Dubu Village | A meal built around Gangneung's soft tofu | 60-90 minutes, plus any queue |
| Ojukheon | Korean history and traditional architecture | 60-90 minutes |
| Jungang Market | Browsing food stalls and choosing lunch or snacks | 60-90 minutes |
| Wolhwa Street | A short downtown walk alongside a market visit | 30-45 minutes for a selected section |
Seven things to do in Gangneung, and how to fit them in
1. Walk Anmok Beach, then choose one cafe
Search names: Anmok Beach / 안목해변; Gangneung Coffee Street / 강릉커피거리.
Anmok combines a seafront walk with a street of cafes. That makes it a useful first choice when your reason for leaving Seoul is simple: you want to see the sea and sit somewhere with a view.
Walk the shore before deciding where to sit. Check the menu, available seats and the view from the actual table, rather than choosing only from a cafe's exterior photo. One relaxed stop usually gives you more time outside than hopping between several cafes.
Treat the beach and Coffee Street as one part of your day. You do not need to budget a separate cross-city transfer between them. In cooler weather, plan for a coastal walk and an indoor drink; do not make swimming the reason this itinerary works.
2. Choose Gangmun Beach when Chodang is your lunch priority
Search name: Gangmun Beach / 강문해변.
Gangmun is a useful alternative to Anmok when you want to combine a beach with the Chodang area. It gives the day a different emphasis: a walk by the water, a tofu meal and, if time allows, a selected stretch around Gyeongpo.
You do not need to visit both Gangmun and Anmok on a short trip. Decide whether a particular cafe at Anmok matters more than the other stops you would lose. Check the walking route from your chosen restaurant, not just the distance between two neighborhood labels.
3. Walk a section of Gyeongpo Lake
Search name: Gyeongpo Lake / 경포호.
The lake provides a different setting from the open beach. Choose it if you want a longer walk, a quieter part of the itinerary or time away from shopping and cafe queues.
Set your start and finish before you begin. A short waterfront section and a full circuit are different commitments, and neither should be squeezed into the same time allowance. Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpo Beach are also different destinations: check which pin you have selected.
For a first visit, make the lake your walking priority and choose a shorter beach stop. If everyone is already tired, shorten the walk rather than sacrificing your return-train buffer.
4. Eat soft tofu in Chodang Dubu Village
Search name: Chodang Dubu Village / 초당두부마을.
Chodang is known for its soft tofu, or sundubu. It is a restaurant area, not one attraction with a single entrance, ticket or closing time. Select an actual restaurant before making a special journey there.
Read the menu carefully: a mild tofu set and a spicy seafood-style stew are different meals. Tofu on the sign does not establish that a dish is vegetarian, vegan or halal. Ask about broth, sauces and accompaniments if you have dietary requirements.
Give the meal a proper place in the day. If your chosen restaurant has a long queue, decide whether the meal is the priority or whether another restaurant is acceptable. Do not silently take that waiting time from the journey back to the station.
5. Visit Ojukheon for a break from the coast
Search name: Ojukheon / 오죽헌.
Ojukheon is associated with the Joseon scholar Yi I, whose birthplace is within the historic complex. Choose it for traditional buildings and cultural context, especially if your Korea trip has otherwise been dominated by shopping and beach stops.
This is a place to explore at walking pace, not a photo stop to squeeze between taxis. Its grounds also mean it is not an entirely indoor alternative on a rainy day.
The Korea Tourism Organization currently lists adult admission at KRW 3,000 and visiting hours of 09:00-18:00, with last admission at 17:00. Check the Ojukheon visitor information before you go, particularly around holidays or special events.
6. Browse Gangneung Jungang Market
Search name: Gangneung Jungang Market / 강릉중앙시장.
Use the market as a food-and-browsing stop rather than a checklist of famous stalls. Look around before buying a full meal, especially if you want to try a few smaller items.
The market includes shops and surrounding alleyway vendors. Individual hours vary, so a general market opening time is not a promise that a particular stall will serve breakfast or a late dinner. Check the exact business when one food is the reason for your visit.
Keep enough room in your bag for anything you buy, and choose a meal you can comfortably finish before moving on. The market pairs naturally with a short walk on nearby Wolhwa Street.
7. Add a short walk on Wolhwa Street
Search name: Wolhwa Street / 월화거리.
Wolhwa Street follows a former railway corridor through downtown Gangneung. It is a useful change of pace after the market: take a walk, browse small shops and see a different part of the city from the seafront.
The street is longer than the short market-side section used in our sample plan. You do not have to walk its full length to include it. Choose an endpoint, then check the route from there to Gangneung Station.
This is also the easiest optional piece to shorten. A pleasant extra walk should not become a reason to rush the last transfer of the day.
A realistic one-day route from Gangneung Station
For a first visit focused on coffee, the sea and local food, use this sequence:
Gangneung Station -> Anmok Beach and Coffee Street -> Jungang Market -> a short section of Wolhwa Street -> Gangneung Station
This is an editorial route suggestion, not a preloaded Pglemaps itinerary or a timed transport service. Choose trains that leave enough time for the stops, local travel and delays. Around 5-6 hours in Gangneung is a useful planning target for this compact version, not a guarantee for every arrival time or transport choice.
| Part of the day | What to do | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| After arrival | Check your return train and the route to Anmok | Time to leave the station and find transport |
| First main stop | Beach walk and one cafe | The 90-120 minutes you came for |
| Second main stop | Jungang Market for food and browsing | A real meal break, not just queueing |
| Optional finish | A short Wolhwa Street walk | Enough time to return to the station |
Keep the coast first if the weather is good and your chosen cafe is open. If arriving hungry, reverse the two main areas after checking opening hours and your return journey. The order should serve your actual arrival, not force you to follow an arbitrary clock.
Set a latest departure time from your final stop. Work backward from your booked train using the current journey estimate, then add a delay allowance and time inside the station. Do not count a taxi as instantly available or assume a bus arrives when you reach the stop.
Change the route by swapping, not stacking
| Your priority | Make this change | Leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Korean history | Make Ojukheon the main visit, then return downtown for the market | The Anmok cafe block if time is limited |
| Tofu and a coastal walk | Build around Chodang and Gangmun; add a selected lake section only if time allows | Anmok and a separate downtown food stop |
| A relaxed short visit | Keep Anmok and one meal, then return to the station | Extra beaches and long walks |
| More than one coastal area | Consider an overnight stay and separate the areas by day | The expectation of seeing everything between two trains |
Jumunjin's BTS photo stop and Jeongdongjin also appear in Gangneung travel lists. They are separate outings beyond this compact central plan, not quick additions between the market and your train. If either is your main reason for coming, build the day around it and check the exact transport connections first.
When rain or strong wind changes the appeal of the coast, reduce the outdoor stops. Check a specific indoor venue's hours and tickets before substituting it. Do not assume a historical site is fully sheltered or that every cafe can seat your whole group.
Getting from Seoul to Gangneung, then around the city
KTX connects Seoul with Gangneung. Check your travel date, departure station, journey time, fare and return availability directly with KORAIL before fixing the sightseeing plan. The time between your arrival and return trains is your local sightseeing window, not your entire day away from the hotel.
Gangneung Station is not on the beach. Budget a local journey after getting off the train. A bus can suit a flexible plan; a taxi may be useful when you want to reduce transfers or have less time. Compare the complete journey, including the walk to the stop and waiting, rather than only the time in the vehicle.
Walk within a beach area or the market-and-Wolhwa section, but check a proper route before joining different areas on foot. A straight-line distance is not a walking route. Our Naver Map English guide explains a useful tool for checking local directions alongside your travel plan.
Keep the budget in separate parts: return rail tickets, local transport, food and coffee, and any paid admission. There is no single Gangneung day-trip price, because a taxi-heavy day and a bus-and-walking day make different trade-offs.
Turn your shortlist into your own Pglemaps plan
The useful next step is not to save all seven places. Choose the two or three stops you would be disappointed to miss, then decide what is optional.
Pglemaps is a travel-planning website where you can select Gangneung and organize places around your Korea travel dates. Start from your actual trip, including your accommodation or a relevant station as a starting point. A station used for planning is not an accommodation booking.
- Choose Gangneung within your Korea trip and enter your travel dates.
- Pick the place you want to search for. Try its Korean name if the English results are unclear.
- Check that the result is in Gangneung and matches the intended place, not a similarly named restaurant elsewhere.
- Add suitable results to your plan and keep the day's essential stops separate from optional ideas.
- Check live local directions, opening hours and your train independently before traveling.
This gives the article a practical use: your beach-and-coffee day can differ from someone else's history-and-tofu day. The purpose is to build a plan around your choices, not to copy every stop here. For more on the planning approach, see our Korea trip planner guide.

Questions to answer before you go
Is Gangneung worth a day trip from Seoul?
It can be, if the sea, coffee or a specific cultural stop is a strong reason for your visit and your trains leave a useful sightseeing window. If you want several distant coastal stops or a slow evening by the water, compare an overnight stay instead of forcing everything into one day.
Can you visit Gangneung without a car?
Yes, you can combine rail travel with local buses, taxis and walking. Keep your shortlist compact and check the connection between each stop. Car-free does not mean every attraction is within walking distance of the station.
Should you visit Anmok, Gangmun and Gyeongpo in the same day?
Choose based on the experience you want. Anmok works for coffee beside the sea; Gangmun and Chodang make a different beach-and-food combination; Gyeongpo Lake gives you a lakeside walk. Visiting all of them is not a requirement for a satisfying first trip.
How many days do you need in Gangneung?
One day suits a small selection. An overnight stay gives you more room for another area, an unhurried dinner or a slower start the next morning. Decide from your actual list and transport options, not from how many attractions appear in a search result.
