Search "best time to visit El Nido" and you'll get the same answer everywhere: avoid the rainy season. June to October is wet, island hopping gets canceled, all that.
But I went in late August, and it's easily in my top 5 trips of all time.

A friend who went during peak season told me she waited an hour and a half in line just to enter Big Lagoon.
I went in the off-season and had Big Lagoon to myself for 30 minutes. No one in any of my photos, just silence while kayaking.
That was the moment "paradise" actually felt real.

Off-season El Nido isn't better than peak season in every way. There are real trade-offs: wet weather, some tour disruptions. But if you know what you're doing, off-season is honestly more magical.

So in this guide, I'm walking through the real charm of off-season El Nido, what the rainy season actually looks like, price differences by season, and tips for traveling off-peak.
This might run counter to mainstream travel advice, but it's all based on personal experience.

🌧️ When Exactly Is El Nido's Off-Season

Philippine seasons split by rainfall into two main periods.

Season Months Weather Crowds
Dry Season (Peak) November–May Sunny, hot, calm seas Very crowded
Rainy Season (Off) June–October Tropical showers, humid Light
Super Peak December–February Holiday crowds + best weather Overwhelming
Sweet Spot September–October Rainy but less rain Lightest crowds

💡 Month-by-Month Breakdown

June – Rainy season begins, occasional showers
July–August – Peak rainy season (300mm+ monthly rainfall)
September – Tail end of rainy season, occasional typhoons
October – Last of the rain, weather improving fast
Early November – The golden window. Almost dry, still off-season prices

💡 The Best Off-Season Windows

The real sweet spots are early to mid-June or late October to early November.
- June: Rainy season just starting, low rain frequency
- Late October/early November: Rainy season ending, weather almost dry

These windows give you off-season prices with near-dry weather.

I went in late August, and even that was great. Out of 5 days, 3 were nearly rain-free, and on rainy days, it was just 1-2 hours of showers, then clear skies.

🌦️ What the Rainy Season Actually Looks Like

If you hear "rainy season" and picture a typical temperate climate monsoon, you've got it wrong.

☀️ The Real Rainy Season

  • Not raining all day – Usually 1-3 hours of tropical showers
  • Clears up fast – Sun comes back out
  • Strong sun when it's not raining – Genuinely hot
  • High humidity – A bit sticky
Month Avg Temp Rainfall Rainy Days
June 27-32°C 184mm 12 days
July 26-31°C 303mm 16 days
August 26-31°C 337mm 17 days
September 26-31°C 290mm 16 days
October 26-32°C 270mm 15 days

🌧️ How It Differs from Western Wet Seasons

Aspect Western Wet Season Philippine Rainy Season
Rain timing All day, overcast 1-3 hour bursts
Sky Stays dark Clears after rain
Activities Limited Mostly doable
Humidity Cool and damp Hot and humid

⚠️ Typhoon Risk

  • Possible July-October
  • El Nido is in northern Palawan, less direct impact
  • Always check weather before departure

I had 5 days in late August. Two of them had rain – one hour in the morning, one in the afternoon.
The rest of the time was sunny, and all my island hopping tours ran on schedule.

✨ 7 Reasons Off-Season Is Actually Better

These are the things that made me a convert.

🥇 1. Almost No Crowds (Seriously)

Having Big Lagoon to myself for 30 minutes was genuinely shocking.
Peak season can have 100+ people at one lagoon at once.
Off-season gives you actual time to take photos without strangers in them.

🥈 2. Quieter Island Hopping

Off-season boats often have just 4-6 people.
Peak season packs 20+ per boat.
The guide ends up giving you near-private attention.

🥉 3. Prices Are Actually Cheap

Hotel prices are 30-50% of peak season.
A 5-star resort that's $500/night in peak season drops to $200-250.
Flights drop by similar margins.

🌿 4. Nature at Its Lushest

Plants thrive in the rainy season. Limestone cliffs look extra alive.
Waterfalls run fuller and more dramatic.

🎁 5. Locals Are More Welcoming

With fewer tourists, staff and guides are noticeably friendlier.
They aren't burned out from peak season chaos.

🌅 6. Better Sunsets

Rainy season clouds make for more dramatic sunsets.
Pink skies happen often.

🐢 7. More Marine Life

Warmer waters mean turtle and tropical fish sightings increase.
Snorkeling has more to offer than usual.

💰 How Much You'll Save on Hotels and Flights

This is where off-season really shines. The savings are massive.

🏨 Accommodation Price Comparison

Hotel Tier Peak Season (per night) Off-Season (per night) Savings
Guesthouse $25-40 USD $12-20 USD ~50%
3-star hotel $55-80 USD $30-45 USD ~50%
4-star resort $120-200 USD $60-100 USD ~50%
5-star resort $400-650 USD $170-330 USD ~50%

The famous El Nido Resorts (Miniloc Island Resort, Lagen Island Resort) drop especially hard in off-season. What's normally $500-800/night becomes accessible at $250-400.

✈️ Flight Price Comparison

Route Peak Round-trip Off-Season Round-trip Savings
From US West Coast → Manila $1,200-1,800 $700-1,000 ~40%
Manila → Puerto Princesa $80-150 $50-80 ~40%
Manila → El Nido (direct) $150-250 $100-150 ~30%

🚗 Other Costs

Item Price Notes
Island Hopping Tour A 1,400-1,700 PHP (~$25-30) Same in both seasons
Island Hopping Tour C 1,500-1,800 PHP (~$27-32)
Environmental Fee 200 PHP (one-time) Valid 10 days
Van: Puerto → El Nido 700-900 PHP (~$13-16) 5-6 hours
Airport Taxi 500-700 PHP

💡 Off-Season Total Trip Example (5 days)

  • Flights: ~$700
  • 4-star hotel x 4 nights: ~$280
  • Island hopping x 2 tours: ~$60
  • Food & transport: ~$120
  • Total: ~$1,160 per person

Same trip in peak season would run $1,900-2,200 per person.
Almost $1,000 in savings.

⛵ Which Island Hopping Tours Run in the Off-Season

Most tours run normally throughout the rainy season.

✅ Off-Season-Friendly Tours

Tour A (Most Popular)
- Big Lagoon, Shimizu Island, Secret Lagoon, 7 Commando Beach
- Runs 90% of off-season days

Tour B
- Snake Island, Cudugnon Cave, Cathedral Cave, Entalula Beach
- Runs normally

Tour C
- Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Matinloc, Talisay Beach, Secret Beach
- Runs normally

Tour D
- Cadlao Lagoon, Paradise Beach, Natnat Beach, Bukal Beach, Small Lagoon
- Runs normally

⚠️ Off-Season Tour Notes

  • Rough waves may cut some spots (like Small Lagoon)
  • Typhoon warnings halt operations (safety first)
  • Tours start early to beat afternoon showers
  • Check forecast before booking

Best sequence:
- Day 1: Tour A (Big Lagoon is a must)
- Day 2: Tour C (Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach)
- Day 3: Tour B or D (pick one)

I did A → C → D, with just 4 people on our boat each time.
It felt like having a private guide. Genuinely luxurious for off-season prices.

⚠️ What You Can't Do in the Off-Season

Honest list of trade-offs.

❌ 1. Bacuit Bay Outer Routes

Rough waves can block parts of outer bay tours.

❌ 2. Some Far-Out Islands

Choppy seas can cancel longer-distance tours.

❌ 3. Perfect Beach Photos All Day

Cloudy days mean the water looks less iconic blue.
But fewer crowds compensate by letting you take all the photos you want.

❌ 4. Skydiving/Paragliding Nearby

Limited regional weather-dependent activities.

❌ 5. Guaranteed Sun

If you want a sun-drenched beach trip with zero weather risk, off-season isn't for you.

💡 Why It Still Wins

Despite these:
- Main island hopping tours all run
- Everything else is calmer and more spacious
- Prices are massively better

Net positive for me.

A 5-day trip is the sweet spot for off-season El Nido.

Day 1. Manila + Travel to Puerto Princesa

  • Arrive Manila in the morning
  • Manila → Puerto Princesa (1-hour domestic flight)
  • Overnight in Puerto or push to El Nido (5-hour van)

Day 2. Arrive El Nido + Settle In

  • Reach El Nido by afternoon (if doing van)
  • Check in, beach walk
  • Dinner on Corong Corong street

Day 3. Island Hopping Tour A

  • Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu, 7 Commando
  • 9am departure, 5pm return
  • Dinner at a beach cafe

Day 4. Island Hopping Tour C

  • Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Secret Beach
  • The most photogenic tour
  • Sunset on the beach

Day 5. Free Day + Departure

  • Morning free (massage, beach cafe)
  • Afternoon transit back to Puerto
  • Connect through Manila for return

💡 A More Relaxed Version

6 days works even better:
- Day 3: Tour A
- Day 4: Rest + beach day
- Day 5: Tour C
- Day 6: Tour B or D

Island hopping tours are full-day affairs. Alternating with rest days helps physically.

🎒 What to Pack for Rainy Weather

Essentials for off-season El Nido.

☔ For Rain

  • Waterproof backpack cover or dry bag
  • Compact umbrella or rain poncho
  • Waterproof phone case (essential for island hopping)
  • Dry bag (for tour day gear)

☀️ For Sun

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses

🐠 Island Hopping Must-Haves

  • Towels (one big, one small)

💊 Health Items

  • Mosquito repellent (rainy season = more mosquitos)
  • Anti-diarrhea medicine
  • Basic first-aid kit

💡 The One Item I Most Recommend

Waterproof phone case – If you want any usable island hopping photos, this is non-negotiable.
Available at travel shops for $5-15.

I forgot one on my first trip and lost half my Big Lagoon shots to a sudden shower.
Top regret of the entire trip.

⚠️ Off-Season Travel Precautions

⚠️ 1. Build Flexibility Into Your Itinerary

Bad weather can cancel things.
Have at least one extra day as a buffer for tours.

⚠️ 2. Travel Insurance Is Essential

Off-season has higher flight delay and cancellation risk.
Get insurance.

⚠️ 3. Get Pesos Before El Nido

El Nido ATMs are limited and frequently malfunction.
Exchange in Manila or Puerto instead.

⚠️ 4. Internet and Connectivity

El Nido Wi-Fi is slow.
Get a local SIM (Globe, Smart) or international roaming.

⚠️ 5. Book Tours Ahead

Even in off-season, popular tours can fill up.
Book 1-2 days in advance.

⚠️ 6. El Nido Airport vs Puerto Airport

  • El Nido Airport (ENI): Direct, expensive, fast
  • Puerto Princesa (PPS): Connecting, cheaper, 5-6 hour van after
  • PPS is the off-season value play
