Things to Do in Gangnam: What to Choose and How to Plan Your Day

For a first visit, start with Starfield Library and COEX Mall and pair them with Bongeunsa Temple. For a longer day, add one activity that matches your interests: Seolleung and Jeongneung for history, Dosan Park and Apgujeong for shopping, or a personal color appointment for a more personal Seoul experience.

The important choice is not how many things to do in Gangnam you can collect. It is which part of Gangnam deserves your time.

A temple visit, a library photo, a café break and a beauty consultation can all belong in a Gangnam day. They do not all belong in the same half-day. This guide helps you choose a manageable combination, with searchable place names and the details that can change your plan.

Choose the Gangnam Experience You Actually Want

Your priority Start here What to leave for another visit
A first visit with recognizable sights Bongeunsa + Starfield Library + COEX A second shopping district
History and an outdoor walk Seolleung and Jeongneung A rushed visit near the last-entry time
Fashion, cafés and browsing Dosan Park + Apgujeong Rodeo COEX unless you have a specific reason to go
Smaller streets and a café stop Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil Trying to cover every nearby shopping area
A personal color consultation Your chosen studio + nearby shopping Several fixed-time attractions before the appointment
Evening shopping and dinner Gangnam Station area A tomb visit after its seasonal closing time

For a first visit, we recommend setting aside around four hours for the Bongeunsa and COEX combination, including a meal. That is an editorial time budget, not a measured tour duration. Add more time for shopping, queues, children or limited mobility.

Gangnam Station is not the station for every attraction called “Gangnam.” COEX, Apgujeong and Sinsa have different access points. This guide focuses on Gangnam-gu; Banpo and Jamsil are separate outings, not automatic additions.

1. See Starfield Library, Then Decide How Much COEX You Want

Starfield Library is the stop to choose if the tall bookshelves are one of the Seoul images you want to see in person. You can look around, take photos where permitted and spend a little time reading without committing to a paid attraction.

The library sits inside a much larger shopping complex. Treat these as two decisions: seeing the library and spending time in COEX Mall. A library photo stop does not require a full afternoon of shopping.

If you want clothing, cosmetics or lunch, check the mall directory and pick a few destinations. Otherwise, it is easy for an undefined “look around COEX” to use up the time intended for your next stop.

  • Search: Starfield Library / 별마당도서관.
  • Address: 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu. Select the named venue pin inside COEX.
  • Access: Samseong Station, Line 2, exits 5 or 6; or Bongeunsa Station, Line 9, exit 7.
  • Visitor information: library admission is free; regular hours are 10:30–22:00. Individual mall businesses can have different hours.

The library works well as an indoor anchor on a rainy day. That does not make every route into the complex, or every activity around it, weatherproof.

2. Pair COEX with Bongeunsa Temple

Bongeunsa adds a different kind of experience to a shopping-heavy day: temple courtyards, religious buildings and time away from retail displays. It is a working Buddhist temple, not simply a photo backdrop.

Choose it if you want a cultural stop without switching to another neighborhood. Give yourself permission to pause rather than turn the visit into a quick list of photo angles. Follow local signs, keep voices low and avoid interrupting worship.

  • Search: Bongeunsa Temple / 봉은사.
  • Address: 531 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam-gu.
  • Access: Bongeunsa Station, Line 9, exit 1.
  • Official visitor listing: access to spaces can depend on services and prayer activities. General temple admission is free; separately booked programs are different.

A daytime visit is the simplest fit for the sample plan below. Do not assume that published opening hours mean every worship space is available for sightseeing.

3. Walk Through Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs

Choose this stop when you want history and an outdoor walk more than another shopping session. The royal burial grounds give you a reason to slow down and look at Gangnam beyond its commercial streets.

Search for the combined site, not just “Jeongneung,” which can lead you to a different place in Seoul. This is also the stop where checking the date matters most.

  • Search: Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs / 서울 선릉과 정릉, also called 선정릉.
  • Address: 1 Seolleung-ro 100-gil, Gangnam-gu.
  • Access: Seolleung Station, Line 2 or Suin-Bundang Line, exit 10.
  • Regular closure: Monday. When a regular closing day is a public holiday, closure moves to the next non-holiday.
  • Standard individual admission: KRW 1,000 for foreign visitors aged 19–64; for Korean citizens, the standard adult band is 25–64. Exemptions apply.

The Korea Heritage Service schedule lists March–October hours as 06:00–21:00, with last entry at 20:00. In November–January, hours shorten to 06:30–17:30, with last entry at 16:30. February is 06:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:00.

Make this a deliberate addition, not a stop you hope to squeeze in after shopping. If the grounds are closed or the weather makes an outdoor visit unappealing, keep the COEX portion longer instead.

4. Browse Around Dosan Park and Apgujeong Rodeo

This is the option for travelers whose idea of a good afternoon involves browsing, choosing a café and leaving room for an unplanned discovery. Use Dosan Park as a recognizable starting point, then choose the particular shops you care about around Apgujeong.

The park gives the afternoon a break from spending. You do not need a shopping bag from every street to make the visit worthwhile.

  • Search: Dosan Park / 도산공원.
  • Address: 20 Dosan-daero 45-gil, Gangnam-gu.
  • Search for the shopping area separately: Apgujeong Rodeo Street / 압구정 로데오거리.
  • Useful station: Apgujeong Rodeo on the Suin-Bundang Line.

Dosan Park's public grounds are free to enter. Do not confuse park access with the opening hours of the memorial hall. Shops and cafés have their own schedules.

K-pop fans can check our K-Star Road guide before adding the themed street. It is an optional interest-based detour, not a reason for everyone to extend the afternoon.

5. Choose Garosu-gil for a Sinsa Shopping and Café Outing

Garosu-gil suits a visit built around browsing smaller streets rather than navigating a large mall. Decide on one shop or café you genuinely want to visit, then leave time to explore around it.

It is a different starting area from COEX. If you have only half a day, choosing Garosu-gil instead of COEX can be more enjoyable than trying to fit both into the same outing.

  • Search: Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil / 신사동 가로수길.
  • Reference address: 23 Garosu-gil, Gangnam-gu. This identifies the street area, not a single entrance.
  • Access: Sinsa Station, Line 3, exit 8.
  • Visitor information: business hours and closures vary by store.

Do not plan an early shopping start just because the street itself is accessible. Check your chosen business before making it the reason for your trip.

6. Finish Around Gangnam Station for Shopping and Dinner

The Gangnam Station area makes sense when shopping or an evening meal is your priority. Start with the underground shopping center if its shops interest you, then choose somewhere to eat based on your budget, dietary needs and the current menu.

Keep this separate from the COEX decision. “Shopping in Gangnam” can mean quite different areas, and changing between them uses time that a shopping list does not show.

  • Search: Gangnam Station Underground Shopping Center / 강남역 지하도상가.
  • Address: 396 Gangnam-daero, underground, Gangnam-gu.
  • Access: Gangnam Station, Line 2 or Shinbundang Line.
  • The facilities operator lists regular shopping hours as 10:00–22:00, with some holiday exceptions. Individual shops can vary.

The underground passage being accessible does not mean the shops are open all night. This is also not Goto Mall at Express Bus Terminal.

7. Make a Personal Color Appointment the Center of Your Visit

A personal color consultation can give your Gangnam visit a purpose beyond sightseeing: exploring which colors you would like to use in clothing or makeup, then browsing with those ideas in mind.

It is optional, and it works best when you actually want the consultation. Do not book it merely to fill a gap between attractions.

One real Pglemaps listing in Gangnam is Mood Collect White Gangnam, at 7 Teheran-ro 6-gil, 4F, Room 401. Its listed one-to-one 16-season color analysis is 50 minutes at KRW 150,000. This is a current menu example, not a guaranteed price or available appointment for your date.

The listing shows English, Japanese and Chinese, with interpreter availability. Confirm how your chosen language will be provided, whether any extra fee applies, and which package you need before paying.

You can compare personal color studios on Pglemaps by their listed location, language, duration and package price. Check the address carefully: not every studio in the catalog is in Gangnam.

The booking process matters. Choose a package, date and time; availability is rechecked before payment. The deposit is paid online and the remaining balance at the studio. Payment does not itself confirm the appointment: the studio must approve the request, after which Pglemaps sends confirmation.

Build your day around that confirmed time. Replace an optional sightseeing or shopping block rather than adding a consultation to an already full plan.

A Manageable Half-Day Gangnam Itinerary

For a first visit without an appointment, use this order:

Bongeunsa → Starfield Library → lunch → selected COEX shops.

Part of the visit Suggested time budget What the allowance is for
Bongeunsa 45 minutes A daytime temple visit
Move into COEX and orient yourself 20 minutes Crossings, entrances and finding the library
Starfield Library 40 minutes Looking around and photos
Lunch 45 minutes A meal in the complex
Selected COEX shops 60 minutes Your own short shopping list
Flexible buffer 30 minutes Rest, navigation or a longer queue
Total 4 hours Excludes travel from and back to your accommodation

These are planning allowances, not verified walking times or promises about queues. If lunch or shopping takes longer, shorten the optional shopping block. You do not need to “complete” a list.

For a longer day, add one clear priority: the royal tombs while open, another shopping area, or a confirmed appointment. Recheck transport and the time left before committing to a second area.

Turn Your Favorites into a Pglemaps Plan

A list of eight appealing places can still produce an awkward day. Start with three choices: the stop you care about most, one compatible nearby activity and a meal break. Keep everything else optional.

Start your Seoul plan on Pglemaps, the Korea travel-planning website. Choose Seoul and your actual travel dates, then use your shortlist when selecting places for your trip.

Use the exact place names in this guide and check the address of each result. If a place is missing or a result is ambiguous, keep its address separately and verify it before using it in your plan. The example above is an editorial suggestion, not a route already loaded into your account.

For a beauty day, your confirmed studio location and time are the starting constraints. For a sightseeing day, opening hours and the part of Gangnam you choose come first. Pglemaps gives you a place to start turning those preferences into a trip plan; check live directions separately before traveling.

Questions Before You Go

Is Gangnam worth visiting on a first Seoul trip?

Yes, if its mix of contemporary shopping, a temple, the library or beauty services matches your interests. It is less essential if your limited time is already committed to palaces and traditional neighborhoods. Choose it for something you want to do, not just because the name is familiar.

Is half a day enough?

Half a day is a useful starting budget for the Bongeunsa and COEX pairing. It is not a comfortable budget for COEX, Apgujeong, Sinsa, Gangnam Station and a consultation together. Keep one area as the main focus.

What can I do in Gangnam when it rains?

Prioritize Starfield Library and selected COEX shops. A booked indoor appointment is another option, but check the journey and do not assume every transfer is covered. The tombs and longer neighborhood walks can move to another day.

What if I want to go shopping after personal color analysis?

Choose shops near the actual studio, not near whichever Gangnam attraction is most famous. Leave time after the session and confirm the shops are open. The useful order is appointment, a break, then browsing, with purchases entirely optional.
